The LABC Refugee Mission Coordinating Committee first met on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2007. The group's function is to welcome and assist the many new Karen and Chin refugees from Burma that are arriving in the Rochester area. Many are now attending LABC and some have now joined as members. Transportation is being provided each Sunday with the church van and indivual drivers to the English, Karen, and Chin worship services being held.
This Committee with both American and refugee members (from our church and the community ) is working to assist all Burmese refugees with resettlement, in coordination with their sponsoring agency Catholic Family Center. The Committee is working to assist in meeting refugees as they arrive, helping with needs such as winter boots and coats, and providing advocacy with social service agencies and schools. Individual volunteers are matching up with individuals and families tol develop personal supportive relationships and assist with transportation and the many other challenges of adapting to American culture. A Karen/Chin Cultural Association has been formed to serve as a non-religious support and advocacy group.
