Burmese Refugee Ministry
Lake Avenue has been blessed with an influx of Karen & Chin refugees from Burma in the past year. We now average 80 or more of them participating in our Sunday morning English worship and Sunday School classes for children and youth. Karen & Chin Worship Services occur every week following the English service.
Our Refugee Mission Group, made up of American and refugee members (from LABC and the community) , is very active helping the Burmese refugees with re-settlement as partners with their sponsoring agency, Catholic Family Center. The Mission Group is is assisting with meeting new refugees as they arrive, matching up volunteers with individuals and families to assist with transportation and learning to negotiate American culture, helping them acquire needed winter clothing and boots, and serving as advocates for them.
A Karen/Chin Association has been formed as a non-religious cultural group to organize the rapidly-growing refugees community.
You Can Be Involved! Please contact the church office to get connected to the Refugee Mission Group.
