WHO WE ARE

Claimed by Christ,

Committed to Community,

Compelled to Serve!

A Word from our Interim Pastor

Gordon V. Webster

Who are we as a congregation at Lake Avenue Baptist Church

In September 2009 I responded to an extraordinary congregation’s call to me to become their Interim Senior Pastor.  Who are the people I am encountering?  Energized children, open people of faith, leaders from the Rochester region’s churches and communities, retired ministers and young parents, gay and straight, Asians, Africans and Americans, progressive and traditional, all now learning the joys of being a beloved community, even as it emerges anew.

What makes this church different?

Is it the people’s readiness for transformation?  Perhaps it is their openness to new mission.  When they worship in English, they welcome the prayers of members speaking three languages from Myanmar (former Burma), the language of French as spoken in the Congo and Gabon, as well as the music led by our African-American Gospel Director and our classically trained organist & choir director.

Conversations and plans for culturally aware worship of God are well underway, as is mission outreach to our neighborhood, region, and world. Peoples from each are welcomed into Lake Avenue’s sanctuary and fellowship.

So, as you visit us via your computer, imagine the diversity across our city and globe, gathering each Sunday at 10:00 am, singing praise, learning of Jesus, worshiping God, networking for a world of justice, love and hope.  Does your heart feel the call as mine did?  Take a chance.  Come by!

In joy,

            Gordon
